Well while we were at Jeep Beach the wife caught the bug. She saw a new Gecko green JK and had to have one so when we got home we started looking. Traded her '07 Nitro in on a JKU Thursday so we are now a 2 Jeep family (I can feel my wallet shrinking already). First real mod; ordered a set of Poison Spyder Brawler Rockers today (thanks Rick). So here she is as she looked being picked up at the dealer (she won't look this way long).

Rock Krawler's new 2 5/8's Coil Overs w/ remote Rerservoirs. vs old 2.0 RK and 2.0 Elka's

Well to begin. I wanted to show you the difference between *2.0 Elka Racing Coil Overs w/ remote reservoirs / 2.0 Rock Krawler Coil Overs / 2 5/8...

Well to begin. I wanted to show you the difference between 2.0 Elka Racing Coil Overs w/ remote reservoirs / 2.0 Rock Krawler Coil Overs / 2 5/8 Rock Krawler Coil Overs w/ remote Reservoirs.

Both size and ride.

All Coil Overs had 250lb rated top springs & 350lb rated bottom springs.

My suspension / tires size:
Rock Krawler 3.5" Pro Aluminum 3 link Long Arm kit front/back.
RK Drag Link flip kit.
RK Pro Tie Rod.
Stock D44 axle's beefed up completely.
5.38 gears
West Texas Offroad Hydro stering w/ PSC pump/filtered reservoir
40"x18" tires w/ 3.5" offset.
Currie Anti Rock Alum arms front/back. ( will get body roll from stock )

Seeing how these pics go in randomly.

To Start out. I mounted my front upper mounts 2" higher so I could run a longer coil over and still maintain 3.5" of lift. This is also so I could get a bit more droop out of my suspension.

1st pic - is the ride height after installing the new Rock Krawler 2 5/8's Coil Overs. The 3rd photo is with Rock Krawler 2.0 Coil Overs. I know I have different fenders in both pics..Mostly what I'm showing you is the front end.

The RK 2.0's were 12" in length. The RK 2 5/8's are 11" length. Big difference just in height. The 1st pic with the 2 5/8's is a perfect ride height. If you notice in the 2nd and 2nd to last pic..thats the 2.0 RK's. Notice there is 3" of thread showing..I did this to push the front end up for ride height. Now look at the 6th picture. Notice how there is no thread showing. THIS is how your coil overs should be adjusted with your lift. With the springs in the loosest position. You'll get the best ride and performance when the springs have hardly any preload on them.

Now, look at the last pic. That is the difference in length and size from a (11") 2.0 Elka Coil Over vs (11") 2 5/8's Coil Over. Major difference. ( And yeah I know, the Elka Coil Over is bent..that was after my wreck last year ).

Now the ride difference.

Elka (11") 2.0 w/ remote reservoir's (Steel Bodied) Heavy - They rode great. Performed very well. They never bottomed out while driving on highways. Seemed to be stable while driving at any speed. I was really happy with them. I didn't have to adjust the collar down very far. I'm thinking 1.5". The ride gave me a significant amount of body roll. They weren't as stable as I would have liked them to be on turns. It was tougher to get full stuff with my tires into the fenders. Seemed to tighten up quicker. Plus I was running the upper coil over mount 2" lower. Basically where they should be for this 11" Coil Over. And still maintained the 3.5" of ride height I originally wanted. Then I let a certain female drive my jeep home and she tore into a jetta and ripped the entire front suspension out. So I fixed that. and added new upper mounts 2" higher and also added the axle mounted RK control arm mounts which are 1/4" plate.

Rock Krawler (12") 2.0 Coil Overs (aluminum Bodied) Very light - Now these rode great! Soaked up the bumps really well. But sense I didn't have the extra oil. They seemed to heat up a bit and I lost my cush-feeling just a little. It performed perfectly when I was out in Moab and the Beuna Vista trail's. Except for a slight bit of heating up the oil, which resulted in a bit of fading with shock response. Would bottom out a little quicker. Soon over the winter and after going to Moab EJS this year 2012. The seal's began to leak. The front end would bounce all over the place and I would bottom out all the time. My wheel's would hop when driving up an extremely steep grade. ( All of this was relative to the seal's leaking.) RK has sense revamped their 2.0 seal's and have fixed that problem. I called up RK and they had no problem with installing their new seal's in these. All I had to do was send them in. So I did.....then I opted for their new/bigger Coil Over's.

Rock Krawler (11") 2 5/8 Coil Overs w/ Remote Reservoirs (aluminum Bodied) light - I noticed right away the size difference in the over all Coil Over with these. They were bigger than the Elka 11" and the RK 2.0 12". And they are 11". The shear over all size of these were amazing! I figured on length, size, and that fact that they weren't adjusted for preload when I got them. Meant that I would put them in, just as they came out of the box. Well I had to disconnect my sway bar ends just to put these in...and I still had to wedge them in. Did I mention how big these are. After getting them in, driving down the road and hitting the same bumps I'd hit before at high speed and the corners I took at certain speeds. Well, let me tell ya. Extra Oil/ taller shock / larger dia. spring's.....these road FANTASTIC! Night and Day difference.I've not bottomed them out once. They took a major portion of the body roll I was getting out! They soak up the bumps like you've never felt. I never noticed it before, but these seemed to tighten up my steering and my front end from feeling loose/floaty. The shear comfort and stability of these bigger Coil Overs made all the difference in driving it around town all that better. I haven't had a chance to take it off road yet. Seeing how I just installed these a few weeks ago. But, I'm completely set on these new Coil Overs.

My opinion: If your running 37" or larger tires...Your dealing with a rolling mass of weight and torque that has to be better controlled. I would highly recommend going to a larger dia. Coil Over. Makes a HUGE difference. The jeep now drives like a car. I can take corners like it was stock. When I hit a speed bump..I can soak that sucker up with no problem. Plus when you look in the fender well...and see how much room this new 2 5/8's Coil Over takes up...it just......looks better...doesn't look so puny in there. It actually fits the jeep better. Also, if your running smaller tires and you wanna jump to these 2 5/8's coil overs...It can do nothing but help you out. It just cost's a bit more.

Hope this helps any of you if your thinking of going to Coil Over's.

Well Bode (my one year old) has been bugging me for months to get him a 4x4 of his own. So for his birthday I found a barn find. Actually my dad had MY old one stored in his barn since 1988! Though it would be the perfect starting point.

When we got it from being shipped from the Midwest, it was covered in an inch of dust. We decided that to really make it fit in to the Tertany family it needed to be lifted and get a set of bigger tires.

We went with a modest 2in spacer lift and also got another 1in from the spring over conversion of the new axles I made from scratch.
We increased the size of the tires from 9x1.5x5 street tires to 13x5x5 mud terrains!

We also reinforced the corners so they would not spread apart.
He is thrilled with his first 4x4 and so am I! See ya on the trail!!!!
